KERAS Innovative Intelligent Robotic Autonomous Scanner
KERAS brings together robotics, artificial intelligence and computer vision in a compact, portable scanner that turns pages and captures books entirely on its own. The result is faster, high-quality digitization of even delicate or damaged material, with minimal human involvement.
The KERAS project aims to develop a new, fully automated robotic system for the digitization of books and documents. The system combines robotics, artificial intelligence, optical character recognition and computer vision in order to automatically handle page turning, image capture and processing of the material, significantly reducing the need for human intervention.
The innovation of KERAS lies in the combination of advanced technologies within a compact and portable system. The robotic arm will enable automated page turning, while artificial intelligence algorithms will support text recognition, distortion correction and the production of high-quality digital copies. The system will be able to adapt to different types of books and documents, even when the original material is curved or damaged.
The project is being implemented by Bookscanner in collaboration with the Robotics and Automation Laboratory of the Democritus University of Thrace. Particular emphasis is placed on portability, low energy consumption, LED lighting and environmentally responsible design. KERAS has been included in the “Eastern Macedonia, Thrace 2021–2027” Programme and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
